Welcome to "Healthier Democracy" at the Evergreen Leaders Project! 

 

Democracy should not be a toxic, stressful experience........

 

Here is why we launched the "Healthier Democracy" Movement: 

 

1. The public has reached a saturation point with the lowering of communication standards that can ultimately threaten civility in our culture.

 

2. Lack of civility causes depression, anxiety, fatigue and stress for most people.

 

3. According to the World Health Organization, stress is a major public health problem that can lead to preventable illness as well as violence against the most defenseless and vulnerable in our communities.

 

4. When politics becomes a toxic process, fewer young people and visionary leaders are attracted to public office, and fewer citizens vote and participate in the governance.

 

5. Decline in civil society engagement weakens the resilience of communities to survive challenges such as epidemics, crime, poverty, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other threats to existance.

 

Many candidates and elected leaders need support to stay constructive. That's why we created this unique program- to prevent democarcy from suffering.

 Your valuable donations help us to provide the following services: 

  • Evergreen Leaders Project provides leaders with the world-renowned Institute of Heart Math Advanced Resilience Training and support.
  • We also offer Compassionate Communication and Healthy Meeting Decorum practices for leaders at all levels of public service. We refer requests for Mindfulness Meditation workshops to Green Sangha, one of our collaborating partners.
  • We will provide personal resilience leadership training to elected and other leaders at state-wide, regional and national conferences for elected leaders.  
  • We are developing a "peer to peer" in which new or not-so-new elected leaders can be mentored and guided by seasoned, termed out or retired leaders during challenging times to help prevent addiction or other unhealthy stress respo​nses by elected leaders.  We will also refer leaders who need help to appropriate crisis counseling. 
  • We are developing webinars and a downloadable e-guide for elected leaders to help build on the job resilience and improve "compassionate communication" skills.   
  • Healthy Public Meeting Decorum format to make meetings healthier and more civil.

Evergreen trees are an amazing example of resilience. They use energy efficiently, never dropping all their leaves at once!  Evergreen trees thrive in the most severe weather and can even survive droughts. Ever flexible, they bend with high speed winds and fierce storms, yet stay renewed, pure and fresh all year long. As leaders, we can learn much by reflecting on the inspiring metaphor of the resilience of evergreen trees!

Why does the health of leaders matter?

Leaders are role models for large population groups and they make decisions that impact all of us. And when beloved leaders lose their health or lives, the loss is felt by many - far beyond their families.

 

It's no wonder that the Sacramento Heart Center described public service as a stressful, unhealthy occupation, leading to heart disease and other health problems.  Indeed, a number of elected leaders have suffered from addictions and heart disease. Some very beloved constructive visionary leaders did not survive their terms in office; they lost their lives while in service to us.

 

Public service should not mean private suffering.

 

What if we brought public health practices into the public hearing process, which is watched by community members on public access television?

 

What if elected leaders were introduced to healthy meeting processes, conscious nonviolent communication, mindfulness meditation, HeartMath Institute biofeedback training for heart-mind coherence and Positive Psychology?

 

What if new elected leaders had access to retired or 'termed out' elected officials who could mentor them during the tough times?

 

We spent the past three years donating our time to develop a new program - the first of its kind in the country- with all these elements: the Evergreen Leaders Project!

We have worked for over 25 years to clear public places from toxins like second hand smoke, in spite of well-funded opposition from transnational corporations. We now use our experience of changing social norms and apply it to help those in public service model good public health practices. Here is an example. We have all heard how "sitting is the new smoking" and yet both elected leaders and citizens who come to participate often sit for four to six hours after a full day at work, often without healthy snacks.

 

You don’t have to be a leader to benefit from all the helpful, inspiring and practical tips included on the various pages of this new website.
